Shizumi Kunioka

Miss Shizumi Kunioka was employed by the University Laboratory School (ULS) from 1944 to 1982. She ran the cafeteria like a well-oiled machine and although small in stature, she didn’t let students get away with not following her instructions or misbehaving while in the lunch line or the lunchroom. At the same time, she was always there to brighten up your day with her smile or tease you about giving her a kiss if she caught you sitting on the cafeteria lunch tables!

In a Honolulu StarAdvertiser weekly column (12/27/24) by Bob Sigall, he wrote, “Everyone’s all-time favorite cafeteria manager was Shizumi Kunioka at University High Lab School.” “Rarely does one person touch the lives of so many in their careers. You nurtured us by serving over 3,000,000 lunches, but you also taught us the value of hard work, being responsible and, having concern for others, which has helped us throughout our lives.” Miss Kunioka had many yearbooks (Uniki) dedicated to her and attended countless class reunions.
